Research Summary:

The research in my lab focuses on understanding the neural mechanisms underlying the process of how we perceive 3-dimensional shapes of objects and surfaces. Input to the visual system is inherently 2-dimensional, and yet we are able to effortlessly perceive the 3-dimensionality of objects around us, even in the absence of binocular vision. We have particular interest in understanding how the visual system uses changes in surface texture in the retinal image to accomplish this feat. By using current knowledge of visual system physiology to help guide our psychophysical experiments and computer simulations, we have been able to quantify the 2-D information that is required for correct 3-D shape perception, and are now beginning to understand how this information may be extracted at the neural level.
